How 3rd Bay Outpost Works
3rd Bay Outpost connects boaters who own gear with people looking to rent it for upcoming river trips. Instead of letting rafts, kayaks, dry boxes, coolers, groovers, and camp gear sit unused between adventures, owners can list their equipment for rent and help more people get on the water. Whether you're planning a multi-day permit trip, filling gaps in your gear setup, or looking to offset the cost of ownership, 3rd Bay Outpost helps make river trips more possible through trusted peer-to-peer rentals.
From listing to launch
A step-by-step look at how a rental works on 3rd Bay Outpost.
1. Owners list their gear
Gear owners create rental listings for their rafts, kayaks, paddle boards, coolers, dry boxes, groovers, camp kitchen equipment, and other river gear. Each listing includes photos, a condition description, pricing, availability, and pickup details. Owners set their own pricing and maintain full control over when their gear is available and who they rent to.
2. Renters browse and search for gear
Renters browse available listings by location and trip needs. Whether you need a complete raft setup or just a few pieces to fill out your rig, the marketplace helps connect you with gear owned by fellow boaters in your area.
3. A booking is requested and confirmed
Renters submit a booking request through the platform. Your payment method is collected securely at the time of booking and held until the owner accepts the booking request — you won't be charged until your rental is approved. Once confirmed, both parties receive a Rental Agreement outlining the terms of the rental, each party's responsibilities, and the damage and liability framework that applies. Both parties are expected to read and sign it.
4. Owners and renters coordinate logistics
Once a booking request is accepted and confirmed, both parties communicate directly through 3rd Bay Outpost's messaging platform to coordinate pickup location, timing, and any gear-specific details. Some owners offer flexible pickup locations or local delivery — check the listing details and confirm directly with the owner. Pickup and drop-off logistics are managed between the owner and renter — 3rd Bay Outpost facilitates the transaction but does not coordinate handoffs. Clear, proactive communication at this stage makes for a smooth rental every time.
5. Handoff, inspection, and launch
On the rental start date, the owner and renter meet at the agreed-upon pickup location to transfer the gear. Before taking possession, the renter is responsible for inspecting the equipment and confirming its condition.
If a Damage Protection Plan was purchased, both parties will have received a digital Equipment Condition Report approximately 48 hours prior — a shared record of the gear's known condition at the time of the rental that both parties review and acknowledge before the rental begins. Both the owner and renter are responsible for completing and signing the Equipment Condition Report before the rental period begins.
Once the gear changes hands, the rental is underway. Renters are responsible for using all equipment safely, responsibly, and in accordance with applicable laws and river regulations.
6. Gear is returned and the rental closes
At the end of the rental period, gear is returned to the owner at the agreed-upon time and location.
The renter is expected to return all equipment in the same condition it was received — clean, dry, properly packed, and free of damage beyond normal wear and tear.
The owner should inspect the gear upon return and confirm its condition before closing out the rental. If damage is discovered, it should be documented immediately with photos before the equipment is moved, cleaned, or repaired.
Both parties have the opportunity to leave a review after the rental closes, which helps build trust and transparency across the community.
A marketplace for the whole river community
Everything owners and renters need to know about how the platform works for them.
For owners
Put your gear to work between trips
Most rafts and river setups spend the majority of their time in storage. 3rd Bay Outpost gives owners a way to earn income from gear that would otherwise sit unused — helping offset the cost of ownership, fund future trips, or justify that next upgrade. Payouts are deposited directly to your bank account after the rental period is complete, minus a small platform service fee.
Owners maintain full control over their listings, including:
- Pricing and calendar availability
- Pickup location and requirements
- Renter approval before any booking is confirmed
- Listing photos, descriptions, and condition details
Your gear is protected
Every rental on 3rd Bay Outpost is backed by a signed Rental Agreement that documents each party's responsibilities and establishes the renter's financial liability for damage, loss, or theft.
3rd Bay Outpost also offers a Damage Protection Plan for certain eligible bookings, which renters are either required or have the option to purchase with their rental at checkout and covers accidental physical damage to your equipment.
What to expect as an owner
- Create your listing with accurate photos, a thorough condition description, and a fair replacement value
- Review booking requests and choose to approve, decline, or message the renter for more details before committing
- Coordinate pickup and drop-off directly with your renter
- Sign the Rental Agreement and complete the Equipment Condition Report before the rental starts
- Communicate openly with your renter throughout the process
The owners who have the best experiences are the ones who communicate clearly and set expectations upfront. The more detail you put into your listing and your pre-rental communication, the smoother every rental goes.
For renters
Access more gear for more trips
Traditional rental inventory can be limited — especially during busy weekends and permit season. 3rd Bay Outpost connects renters with gear owned by fellow boaters, including full rafting or kayaking setups, paddles or PFDs, coolers, dry boxes, groovers, camp kitchen kits, and more.
Whether you need a complete setup for a multi-day trip or just a few pieces to fill out your own rig, the marketplace helps you find what you need from people who actually know and use their gear.
Rent directly from the river community
Every rental on 3rd Bay Outpost supports another member of the community. You're not renting from a faceless inventory warehouse; you're borrowing gear from someone who loves it, knows it, and trusts you to take care of it. That relationship is worth something, and we think it makes for a better rental experience on both sides.
What to expect as a renter
- Browse listings and submit a booking request for the gear you need, during the dates you need it
- Sign the Rental Agreement before your rental begins
- Coordinate pickup logistics directly with the owner
- Inspect the gear at pickup and complete the Equipment Condition Report if one was issued
- Use the equipment safely, responsibly, and within the terms of your rental
- Return gear on time and in the condition you received it
- Leave an honest review
Renters are financially responsible for any damage, loss, or theft occurring during the rental period. If you're renting expensive equipment, purchasing the Damage Protection Plan at checkout is the best way to protect yourself from unexpected costs. See our Damage Protection Plan Terms and FAQsfor full details.
Trust, safety, and responsibility
3rd Bay Outpost is built on the belief that people who love the outdoors can trust each other with the things they love. The platform is designed to make that trust structured, documented, and fair for everyone involved.
Every rental includes a signed Rental Agreement, secure payment processing, and direct messaging between owners and renters. When a renter purchases a Damage Protection Plan for their rental, an Equipment Condition Report document creates a mutual record of the gear's condition before the rental begins. Reviews help the community make informed decisions over time.
We're a marketplace facilitator — not a party to the rental agreement between owners and renters. That means the quality of every transaction ultimately comes down to the people involved. Owners who describe their gear honestly, renters who treat borrowed equipment with care, and both parties who communicate clearly and proactively are the foundation this marketplace is built on.

Frequently asked questions
What kinds of gear can be listed and rented?
Rafts, catarafts, hardshell and inflatable kayaks, frames, oars, dry boxes, coolers, groovers, camp kitchen kits, throw bags, rescue gear, PFDs, helmets, trailers, and more!
How do I sign up, and how much does it cost?
Creating an account on 3rd Bay Outpost is free for both owners and renters! To get started, click the Sign Up button at the top of the page and create a profile with your name, email address, and a few basic details.
Once your account is created, renters can immediately browse listings and submit booking requests. Owners can create their first listing right away — just add photos, a description, your pricing, and availability and you're ready to go.
There are no monthly fees, no listing fees, and no cost to create or maintain an account.
Do owners have to approve every booking?
Yes. Owners review booking requests before confirming. No rental is finalized without the owner's approval.
Can I rent individual pieces of gear instead of a full setup?
Yes. Many renters use 3rd Bay Outpost to fill specific gaps in their setup rather than renting a complete rig. Browse by gear type to find what you need.
Where does pickup happen at the beginning of a rental?
Pickup locations are set by the owner and coordinated directly between the owner and renter through the 3rd Bay Outpost's messaging platform. Pickup details and preferred time windows are included in each listing.
What happens if gear is damaged during a rental?
Renters — Document the damage immediately with photos and video. Notify the owner as soon as possible after the damage occurs. Do not attempt to repair or dispose of the damaged equipment before the claim is resolved — unless the repair is necessary to safely complete your trip (for example, patching a punctured raft to finish a float and get off the river). In that case, document the damage thoroughly before making any repair and notify the owner as soon as you're off the water.
Owners — Inspect the gear upon return and document any damage before cleaning or repairing it. Work directly with the renter to resolve any damage or loss. To confirm whether a Damage Protection Plan was purchased for the booking, refer to the Rental Agreement that was emailed to you prior to the rental. If a Damage Protection Plan was purchased, you can [submit a formal claim to 3rd Bay Outpost] to be reimbursed for the cost of repairs or replacement, up to the coverage limit and subject to the applicable deductible paid by the renter.
If no Damage Protection Plan was purchased the renter is directly responsible for covering the full cost of any repairs or replacement, and both parties are expected to work together in good faith to reach a resolution. Contact support@3rdbayoutpost.com if you need help facilitating the conversation.
What if I have a dispute with the other party?
Start by reaching out directly through the platform's messaging tools. Most issues can be resolved with clear communication. If direct resolution isn't working, contact our support team at support@3rdbayoutpost.com. For more on how disputes are handled, see our Platform Policies.
Is 3rd Bay Outpost a rental outfitter?
No. 3rd Bay Outpost is a peer-to-peer rental marketplace. All equipment is owned and listed by individual members of the community. We facilitate the transaction, including hosting of rental listings, calendar and availability management, and secure payment processing. The rental itself is between the owner and the renter.
How do I know the gear is in good condition?
Owners are required to accurately describe their gear and provide current photos. Listings include an overall condition rating and a written description. When a Damage Protection Plan is purchased, both parties complete and sign an Equipment Condition Report, creating a mutual, documented record of the gear's condition at the time of the rental. If something doesn't look right at pickup, document it in your condition report before accepting the equipment.
What river activities is this gear suitable for?
That depends on the specific gear and the owner's listing details. Always confirm with the owner that the equipment is appropriate for your planned trip, water class, and conditions. 3rd Bay Outpost does not certify gear for any specific use and all users are responsible for assessing whether equipment is suitable for their intended activity.
